A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is a check of a used car by a workshop you choose, done before you pay in full. The mechanic looks at the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, electronics and body for faults or past accident repairs, so you know the real condition of the car and can decide, or negotiate, with facts.
When should you book a PPI?
After the test drive and before you pay the full amount. Many buyers place a refundable or conditional deposit to hold the car while the inspection is arranged. Ask the dealer how the deposit works if the PPI finds a problem.
What does a PPI usually cover?
Most workshops read fault codes with a diagnostic scanner, check fluids and leaks, inspect the underside, test the brakes and suspension, look for signs of accident repair or flooding, and road test the car. Ask your workshop for a written list of findings.
Which workshop should do it?

What if the PPI finds something?
Small wear items are normal on a used car. Larger issues can be fixed before handover, reflected in the price, or be a reason to walk away. A good dealer talks you through the report rather than rushing you.
